Workshop at HMC Conference 2026
This section summarizes the workshop “Making Helmholtz Data Assets Visible via the Helmholtz Knowledge Graph”, held as part of the pre-conference program of the HMC Conference 2026.
The development of the Helmholtz Knowledge Graph (HKG) relies on exchange with its users and external contributors. This workshop created a space for direct interaction between the development team and you — the users, data providers, and co-developers — to discuss ideas, share experiences, and contribute perspectives to its further development. We would like to thank all attendees for their valuable and insightful feedback.
Feedback and Resources

We would highly appreciate your feedback regarding our workshop, the HKG Data Model, and the onboarding process. Using the following links you can:
- Tell us how you liked the workshop (short survey in AHAslides).
- Visit our feedback repository to provide any further feedback (GitLab repository).
- Initiate the onboarding process for new Data Providers (short survey in Limesurvey).

This summary distills outcomes of the workshop and allows you to revisit the sessions, captures key inputs from presentations, and highlights selected results from the interactive parallel activities. It also points to ways to stay in touch and follow the further development of the Helmholtz KG.

Key Takeaways
Short on time or not planning to read through the full documentation and workshop results? The following key takeaways summarize the main observations, conclusions, and future directions discussed during the activity:
For Participants
- The Helmholtz KG is evolving from a proof-of-concept to a production-grade infrastructure, with a focus on expanding coverage and increasing data model expressiveness.
- Its data model acts as a top-level semantic layer, designed to align with and extend local domain-specific semantics.
- The documentation provides a solid entry point to understand both the project’s goals and its technical foundations.
- The KG is a participatory system, developed collaboratively with data providers rather than defined top-down.
- In its current development phase, the KG team is looking to onboard new data providers to increase the coverage of the KG across Helmholtz.
For the Development Team
- There is substantial interest in the community to contribute data to the Helmholtz KG, which we aim to actively support.
- Awareness and understanding of the KG are still developing and will be strengthened through documentation and community engagement.
- Feedback on the project direction, roadmap, and current solutions has been very encouraging.
- People liked our workshop, style and discussed topics.
Next Steps / Outlook
Following the workshop we have analysed the input and considering it for the following steps. These you will see reflected in some of our development milestones:
In the near future, our priority will be to increase the coverage of the Helmholtz Knowledge Graph by onboarding new Data Providers. Here the structured process discussed in the workshop will be put into practice and further refined based on the gathered feedback. The HKG Data Model will be adapted as needed throughout this process to both reflect requirements of data providers and increase usefulness of the KG. Of course, the feedback provided during this workshop will also be incorporated.
